Utilizing an original data set containing annual salaries and peer-reviewed publication histories for 328 faculty members we examine the labor market for academic agricultural economists. Our descriptive analysis shows that while the profession remains male-dominated, females are making significant inroads at the lower academic ranks, the profession is relatively top-heavy, with nearly two-thirds of the faculty in our data set currently holding the rank of full professor, differences in annual salary exist primarily for faculty at Top 6 programs, and then primarily for full professors. Our regression analysis suggests that controlling for publication history there are neither statistically significant negative returns to increased tenure nor... |

Foreign fishing fleets drastically overfished the waters off Namibia before that country gained independence in 1990, according to Paul Nichols, Special Adviser to the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. Since then, the Government has taken strong regulatory actions that have brought overfishing under control and allowed depleted fish stocks to rebuild while gaining strong support for the policy among Namibia's commercial fishers. |

This paper analyzes the effects of providing environmental amenities associated with open space in a discrete space urban model. The discrete space model assumes distinct neighborhoods in which developable land is homogeneous within a neighborhood but heterogeneous across neighborhoods. We solve for equilibrium allocation of development, prices and welfare given a pattern of open space provision. We also analyze the optimal provision of open space across neighborhoods. In equilibrium, housing density and price in a neighborhood is increasing in the amount of open space provided in that neighborhood. Whether housing density and prices in other neighborhoods increases or decreases depends on whether the push from reduced availability of developable land in... |

In a recent paper, Mundlak assumes that the price-taking, risk-neutral and profit-maximizing entrepreneur makes his decisions on the basis of a planning model that maximizes expected profit using expected prices. In the same paper, the author asserts that when there is no sample price variation across competitive firms, it is impossible to estimate the supply and factor demand functions from cross-section data using a dual approach. In a famous paper, titled “To Dual or not to Dual,” Pope asserted a similar opinion. This paper shows that, using Mundlak’s assumption about planning decisions based upon expected profit, it is possible to use a dual estimator to estimate supply and factor demand functions. This objective is achieved by using Mundlak’s... |

This chapter uses a new ecological-economic approach to analyze the role of time in range management in a dynamic and stochastic setting. We first construct a theoretical model of a parcel of rangeland in which time restrictions are used to manage the land. We then show how the dynamic and the stochastic properties of this rangeland can be used to construct two managerial objectives that are ecologically and economically meaningful. Finally, using these two objectives, we discuss an approach to range management in which the manager has two interrelated goals. This manager maximizes the profits from range operations and (s)he also takes steps to move the rangeland away from the least desirable state of existence. |
